Tips for a Healthier Spring

Depending on your location you are either digging snow from your driveway or feeling the warmth of spring coming. It’s that time of the year when you can smell the orange blossoms, the kids are out of school for a week enjoying Spring Break, and spring training baseball has started! How can you enjoy its fullest while having a healthier spring and stay active? Here are some ideas: 1. Eat healthy by choosing local agriculture. Arizona is home to many local co-ops, farmers’ markets and community sponsored agriculture programs that provide fresh, seasonal fruits, vegetables, flowers, dairy products and eggs. Not only are you getting delicious, fresh, and wholesome food, but you are also supporting our local economy. 2. Make sure you get some sunshine in your life. Not only does a dose of sunshine every now and then keep us looking good, it is also a great source of vitamin D, which is an important body-strengthening hormone. By spending just 30 minutes at a time out in the sun a few times each week, you are allowing your body to soak up this wonderful vitamin keeping you feeling healthy and happy. 3. Early to bed, early to rise. There isn’t too much medical or scientific evidence that proves waking up early will positively increase wellness. Still, there are studies that show that people who wake up early are more successful, proactive and are able to deal with problems more efficiently. People who wake up early say they are able to spend more time with their families and feel more optimistic towards life. 4. Prepare for Allergies For many, the warmer weather of spring also brings allergies, including sneezing, coughing and sore throats. If you are one of those people, now is the time to make sure you are prepared. An allergy test can help you identify what causes your specific allergy. 5. Stay Active – Go for a Walk Even simple activities such as going for a walk around the neighborhood or through a park can make a difference in your focus to stay healthy. Walking is a great source of exercise – it is low impact and gentle so you can avoid injuries. Studies show that a 30-minute walk every day can help manage weight, lower blood pressure, improve your mood, and help you build stronger muscles. These are just some of the things you can do this spring to stay healthy and enjoy this great time of the year.
