The Truth about Testosterone

Reports show that 2 to 4 million American men suffer from a condition known as hypogonadism or low levels. Testosterone is a key hormone that plays an important role in the development of the male reproductive system as well as maintaining lean muscle mass, bone density and strength. While the condition is becoming better known and understood, very few men are getting the help they need. There are many testosterone products and treatments available including prescriptions and testosterone replacement therapy.

Testosterone Information

Because the symptoms of hypogonadism are similar to ordinary signs of aging, they are often overlooked or ignored. Here are some common symptoms men might experience when suffering from below-normal levels:
  • Low interest or desire for sex
  • Small or soft testicles
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Depression
  • Weight gain
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced bone density
Many men are surprised to learn that testosterone therapy not only helps with sex drive, but it also helps in building bone, producing red blood cells and keeps muscles strong. Additionally, low levels can lead to osteoporosis, anemia, depression and trouble concentrating. In some cases, men with low levels may not experience any symptoms at all.  The best way to learn more about your testosterone levels is through a blood test.  Less than 300 nanograms of testosterone per deciliter is considered low. Doctors will consider the results of the blood test along with any symptoms before making a diagnosis of low testosterone. From there, they will determine if treatment is needed and what the best approach to that treatment should be. Increasing levels does not always cure erectile dysfunction. Other causes such as diseases of the nerves and blood vessels can cause ED in which case testosterone replacement therapy may have little or no effect. Symptoms of low levels are not necessarily limited to men of a certain age group. It can be detected and treated at any age. It is true that men in their 40’s begin to experience a drop in their testosterone levels by about 1% a year.  Men who are overweight for their age or have diabetes are at an even higher risk for low levels and should be tested. Fortunately, there is a solution for low levels including specialized therapy that can restore levels of the hormone to a healthier status.
