Family Practice & Medical Emergency Hours During the Holidays

Medical, emergency, aid.

Here is your scenario: it’s Christmas Eve and your 7 year old just came down with the flu, he/she is miserable and seriously needs some medical attention. What would you do? Aren’t most family practices closed today? It’s not serious enough to go the Emergency Room… Arrowhead Health Centers has come to the rescue. We are open on Christmas Eve from 8 am to 12 pm and even have on call doctors on Christmas Day! There are several illnesses to look out for that are common during the holidays and occasionally hit you right on the only day you have to spend with family. We wanted to go over a few of those so that you know what could be coming.

Common Illnesses During the Holidays

Colds

The common cold is one of the most prevalent illnesses during the holidays. The best way to prevent a cold is to simply wash your hands regularly. This will get rid of any unwanted germs that you may have picked up from touching surfaces used by other people. Remember to also keep household items such as cups and towels clean especially if there is someone in the house who has already developed a cold. If you are the one with the cold, make sure to use disposable tissues instead of a handkerchief to avoid reinfecting your own hands.

Sore Throats

Though most commonly picked up through viral infection, sore throats can also happen from extreme changes in temperature. Going from a room that is centrally heated to the cold outdoors can sometimes affect how the throat feels. An easy fix for this would be to gargle some warm salt water. If it becomes more serious, strep throat for example, then of course see one of our experts.

Flu

The flu can be more serious than some might expect. It’s usually only dangerous to those who are already vulnerable such as those with long term medical conditions. The best way to prevent getting the flu is to get a flu shot. They last a full year and you can usually get them for free. If you are an otherwise healthy person, you just need to rest and drink lots of water and you will be fine.

Get Established with Arrowhead Health Centers

We believe that it would be most beneficial for you to get established in our system sooner rather than later. If you are going to some random urgent care or emergency room on Christmas Day, those providers do not have your medical records and they don’t know your needs. At Arrowhead Health Centers, we strive to know how you function and what makes you feel comfortable. It’s always better to feel like you know the person who is taking care of you and how they treat people.
