Magnets and Foot Problems

Is it truly possible that simply having a magnet next to your skin can relieve pain? For many years now, some doctors and practitioners have been using magnets to treat chronic pain in their patients, claiming very successful results. Now, recent research is backing up that claim.

Magnets and Foot Problems

One study, recently completed at a medical college in New York, involved patients suffering from diabetic neuropathy wearing magnetic foot pads. These patients noted a significant decrease in the numbness and tingling they typically experience. The study concluded that approximately 80% of people with peripheral neuropathy could benefit from magnetic therapy. Furthermore, the therapy could be used to treat other forms of chronic pain as well. So how does it work? Magnets, when held next to the skin, can actually promote relaxation in the capillary walls, which boosts blood flow. As more oxygen-rich blood makes its way to trouble areas, it has a direct impact on the numbness and tingling that is normally felt. Additionally, magnets can help prevent muscle spasms. Muscle spasms can interfere with the electrochemical messages that are transmitted within nerve cells and to the brain. When these messages are impeded from reaching the brain, it can cause sensations of numbness, tingling and even pain in feet, legs, hands and arms. Will any magnet do the trick? When magnet therapy first became an option for treatment many years ago, there were, unfortunately, many “sham magnets” that made their way onto the market. These magnets did very little if anything to help with the foot problems that those with peripheral neuropathy were experiencing. It is important to choose a magnet that is powerful enough to help. There are actually many different medical magnets to choose from and they come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and strengths. Look for a magnet that measures between 450 and 10,000 gauss to ensure that they are strong enough to make a difference. Where do I wear the magnet? The therapist who prescribes magnet therapy will be able to give you appropriate advice on how and where to wear your magnet for optimal relief. Typically, the magnet should be placed on the skin directly over the area of concern. This can be accomplished using bandages or tape.
