Put People First & People Get Healthy™
Most current pain management procedures only mask or reduce pain. This therapy allows your body to potentially heal itself with its own cells. By promoting the body’s natural healing process, acute and chronic injuries of joints, tendons, and soft tendons can heal at an accelerated rate.
– Cost-Effective: The costs of traditional pain management (including medication, extensive visits, physical therapy, etc) can add up quickly, over time. With one consultation and an injection, this treatment could provide all the relief you’re seeking. Plus, you can use your HSA or MSA!
– Easy Treatment: With a simple and painless injection, this treatment option can relieve you of your pain, while avoiding surgery! This treatment has been shown to help restore or improve the function of patients’ muscles, joints, and other damaged tissues while reducing pain that can be caused by damage to those areas.
– Safe and Effective: The Platelet Rich Plasma therapy offered at Arrowhead Health Centers is safe, effective, and easy to administer. It is obtained from your own blood, which is spun in a centrifuge to separate plasma for injection.
A: Platelet-rich Plasma is comprised of plasma, platelets, growth factors, and other cytokines that can help stimulate healing wherever it is injected. We separate this platelet-rich plasma from the rest of your blood cells by centrifuging your blood and pulling off the plasma. We then centrifuge this plasma again and pull off the lower portion that contains the Platelet-Rich Plasma.
A: Platelet-rich Plasma has been used in many different ways to promote the body’s natural healing process. It can help accelerate the healing of both acute and chronic injuries of joints, tendons, and soft tissues. Talk with your doctor about your specific case to see if it is an appropriate option for you.
A: 24-48 hours prior to your injection you will receive a call from one of our nurses to remind you of your appointment and confirm there are no contraindications. Since it is your own blood that is removed to create the PRP it is important that you are feeling well, if you feel that you are sick, or getting sick please let us know so we can reschedule it. If you have any blood disorders or are on any blood thinners it is important to discuss this with your provider prior to scheduling. You cannot have had a corticosteroid in the month prior to your injection. To have the most successful response it is also important to not take any NSAID’s (ie Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Excedrin Migraine, Aspirin, etc) 1 week prior to your injection.
A: A nurse will insert an IV and withdraw from you the quantity of blood needed for the type of injection your healthcare provider has ordered for you. The process of creating the PRP can take about 30 minutes so we recommend you bring a book or magazine to help pass your time as you wait. Once the PRP is ready for the doctor a local anesthetic may be used to numb your skin. The doctor will then insert a needle and may use Ultrasound or Fluoroscopy to ensure a safe and proper position for the needle according to your particular procedure. A dye may also be injected to help make sure the needle is at the correct spot. Once the doctor is sure the needle is correctly placed, the PRP will be injected.
A: Afterwards we need you to continue to avoid corticosteroids and ice for 2 weeks and NSAID’s for 4 weeks. It is normal to have some pain and stiffness of varying intensity and length following your injection. You can use Tylenol and heat to help alleviate some of the discomfort. For the first 1-2 days avoid heavy exertion. On days 3-14 you can do gentle exercise and steadily increase its duration as tolerated with resuming of normal activities on day 15. Your doctor usually will recommend a series of 2-3 injections, depending on your response, done 4-6 weeks apart.
– A: Each patient’s response may be different and is influenced by multiple factors including, but not limited to, severity of degeneration or injury, current tobacco use, age, your platelet levels, general health, and your adherence to the post-PRP protocol. Please discuss with your provider the best protocol for your individual case to maximize your results.
